Río de la Plata
In 1516, Juan Díaz de Solís reached these waters. Ten years later, Sebastián Caboto’s expedition received silver objects from local peoples — silver that actually came from the Andes, far away. That was enough to spark a myth: somewhere upriver lay an endless source of wealth. The river got its name. Later, so did the country: Argentina, land of silver.
But the silver was never there. It was in Potosí. The name was born from absence — a desire pointing elsewhere. And the water itself isn’t silver at all: it’s murky, brown, one of the muddiest rivers on Earth. Beneath the promise of shine, there’s mud.
This piece starts from that gap between myth and reality — a river that has always been a screen for projection: greed and extermination, the sacred and the spectral.
A suspended plane falls like a curtain of water and time, caught between blood-red and silvery gray. Below, small weights scatter and fall into the shadow the piece casts on the floor — the other river, the one that doesn’t shine. The one that holds what sinks: the indigenous peoples exterminated during the conquest, and the bodies dropped from planes during Argentina’s dictatorship, in the so-called „death flights.“
The work doesn’t illustrate this history — it lets it resonate. What hangs and shines. What falls and darkens. Like the river itself, this piece tries to shed light on those depths, where the magic of the intangible and the horror of violence live side by side.
